According to Chopra Center, Ayurveda is the science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = knowledge) that offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vibrant and healthy while realizing their full potential. In the book, Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda, Sahara Rose describes what a Dosha is, how to identify your Dosha, and how to establish an Ayurvedic morning and nighttime ritual. Here are five Ayurvedic wellness habits that you could try to incorporate into your ritual.

  • Oil pulling - Swishing around 1 tablespoon of oil, usually coconut oil or sesame oil, in your month for twenty minutes to clean and detoxify your teeth and gums. Try not to shallow the oil because the oil is pulling bacteria from your month. Discharge the oil into the trash can instead of the sink. Then move on with your normal teeth brushing routine.

  • Drink warm water/tea in the morning - Always try to start your day with a warm drink because something warm allows your body to warm up your digestive system. Try warm water, raw honey, dried ginger and apple cider vinegar.

  • Meditation + Gratitude - Take time everyday to be still and present. Breathe in deeply through your nose and out through your mouth. Mobile apps like Headspace, Calm and Simple Habit provide good guided or unguided meditations. Express gratitude within your life. Acknowledge 3 - 5 specific things you are grateful in your life. You can say them out loud, in your head or write them down in a notebook. Try the app 5 Min Journal app to jot down the things you are grateful for.

  • Dry Skin Brushing - Dry brushing is a great way to stimulate the skin and lymphantic system, improve blood circulation, and release toxins.

  • Self Oil Massage - Abyanga is the practice of massaging oneself for up to 15 minutes to give your body the feeling of love and warmth, decrease the effects of aging, increase circulation, and calm the nerves.
