Coming Back to Reign

Sometimes coming back isn’t about starting over. It’s about realizing the dream you put down still belongs to you. I’m returning to my voice, my creativity, and the conversations I’ve always wanted to have — and this time, I’m bringing all of me. Welcome to SheReignsKali.

There’s something both beautiful and uncomfortable about returning to a dream you once put down. Not because the dream has changed, but because you have.

For a long time, SheReignsKali existed somewhere between something I wanted to do and something I was actually doing. I had the ideas, the vision, and plenty to say. What I didn’t always have was the confidence to simply begin. I convinced myself I needed a clearer niche, a better strategy, better timing, more confidence – a more polished version of myself. Basically, I needed to get my shit together. Except life doesn’t really work like that. I’ve learned that clarity doesn’t always arrive before you begin. Sometimes you have to move first and figure out where you’re going along the way. Done is better than perfect.

So, here I am. I’m Fenix-Reign Kali. Kali is just fine. I’m at a point in my life where I’m increasingly uninterested in pretending I have everything figured out.

I don’t! And, surprisingly, I’m okay with that.

I contain multitudes.

I’m a Black woman, born and raised in the Bay Area, who has spent the last twenty-five years living in the Deep South. I carry pieces of both places with me. I’m a tomboy who loves sneakers and a pair of 5 inch heels. A nerd who love books. A hip-hop lover. A foodie. A woman who appreciates sophistication and has absolutely no intention of surrendering the ratchet. I can have a thoughtful conversation about culture and then spend entirely too much time discussing the terrible decisions of people who don’t actually exist. I love all of that about myself now. It took me a while to get here. For years, I thought adulthood would eventually deliver some finished version of me – an age where I’d know exactly who I was, what I wanted, what I was doing, and where I was going. Apparently, that’s not how this works. I’m still growing, changing, healing, letting go, and discovering new things about myself. I’m still deciding what deserves my energy and what a good life looks life for me. Maybe that’s why SheReignsKali finally feels right.

I wanted somewhere all of me could show up.

I’ve spent a lot of time looking for spaces that reflected women who felt familiar to me – women with layers. Black women who love books, culture, television, movies, music, and all the things that don’t fit neatly into one content niche, who are thoughtful but don’t need every conversations to be serious,  who are still becoming themselves, who can be soft and strong, confident and uncertain, sophisticated and ratchet, ambitious and tired, who can discuss the deeper meaning of something and also say, “Girl, what the hell was THAT?” Because both conversations have value. I wanted a space for both. So instead of continuing to search for it, I decided to make one. That’s SheReignsKali.

So, what are we going to talk about?

Books. Black Culture. TV & Movies. And whatever else gets us talking.

There will be books I need somebody else to read immediately so we can discuss them. Television characters whose business I will absolutely be minding. Movies that stay with me long after the credits roll. Cultural moments I have thoughts about. Favorites, recommendations, stories, random observations, life updates, and probably the occasional opinion nobody asked for. Some conversations won’t fit neatly into any category.

That’s intentional. Because neither do I.

This isn’t about having life figured out.

I’m much more interested in living it. I want to read a good books. Watch great stories. Discover things. Question things. Laugh. Create. Rest. Change my mind. Talk some shit. Learn something. Tell stories. Have conversations. I want SheReignsKali to be somewhere we can do those things together. I’m not interested in presenting a perfectly curated life. Life isn’t always aesthetic. Growth isn’t always photogenic. Sometimes it looks like setting a boundary, changing you mind, or admitting you’ve outgrown something you once thought would be permanent. Sometimes it looks like picking up a dream you put down and realizing it still belongs to you.

That’s what this moment feels like for me. Not a reinvention. Not becoming some shiny new version of myself. A return. To my voice. To my creativity. To the things that make me curious. To the conversations I’ve always wanted to have. And, most importantly, to myself.

Welcome to SheReignsKali.

Until next time…Kali ✨
